Acupuncture is an ancient (think 100 BCE!) alternative medicine therapy that works by inserting needles (very thin) into the skin to promote blood flow, remove blockages and balance the Qi. The Qi is your body’s internal balancing and energy system that is considered the “force” of your body. A healthy Qi is energized and well balanced, leading to positive overall health and as immune support for your body.

Dr. Nia likes to explain the idea of Qi and meridians with the analogy of a freeway system. Each freeway leads to a different destination, or organ, and along this pathway there are multiple major exits that we refer to as acupuncture points. Each organ has its own Qi, such as Kidney Qi, Lung Qi etc… and each organ needs a balanced Qi in order to maintain its vital function in a beneficial way so that the body does not receive any stress or harm. Along each meridian (highway), there can be blockages or ailments (think of a car accident that jams up a freeway, we have all been there).
By inserting a needle into the acupuncture points along this meridian, stagnation can be eliminated, and blood (traffic) flow can once again be achieved. Just like when an accident (or construction project) begins on one highway, the supporting highways become clogged (think of the 5 when the 405 is completely blocked) as a result, your supporting organs can suffer from a blockage in one organ as a result. Thus, treating one organ in need can increase the Qi of surrounding organs as well. Once this happens, your Qi is restored and balanced- leading to a happy and healthy you!
“So, you can’t see all of these invisible meridians in my body to know what is blocked – but then how do you know what meridians need un-jamming and what organs need some TLC?”
Great question! Though you can rest assured that your acupuncturist is highly trained in knowing what organs need balancing (via tongue coloring, signs/symptoms etc), here at our office we have the latest technology called Acugraph Meridian Analysis. This allows our patients to non-invasively see their different meridian and organ levels. Over time, you will see how once un-balanced, deficient, or overactive organs have more stabilized, balanced levels. View the following video to see exactly what Acugraph is and how it, along with your acupuncturist can change your life.
